Jaap Suyderhoud
played a huge roll in OWSC in the early days. Everyone knows his son Mike Suyderhoud. Back in the 60's and 70's Mike attracted many mainland champions to our site and Jaap promoted AWSA sanctioned tournaments. Mike's name was synonymous with slalom skiing! It is actually Jaap's handwriting/signature on the old "Western Wood Ski" because Mike was unavailable to sign it.
Jaap passed in 2005 and was a resident of the Hawaii Kai Marina community for many years. Mike still visits occasionally and resides in Northern California. Mike came out to the club in 2006 and spent some time with us when we lost our dear friend Bill Aspengren aka "The Rock Man". Mike is pictured on our start dock with Cynthia Logan(right). The first two photos show the plaques that are hanging at the USAWS Hall of Fame in Florida. The third photo is from a 2002 Christmas party when we honored Jaap with a framed photo of OWSC and the berm. Reid Shimabukuro designed and presented this award!
The next eight photos are in memory of Bill Aspengren
as we celebrated his life. Bill started to learn the slalom course at age 50 and conquered 34 mph at many of our tournaments. He hosted many mainland pro skiers to help us with our technique. He invited them into his home with the Aloha spirit. Bill also got us some great PR in 2003 when he invited Todd Ristorcelli, the publisher of WATER SKI MAGAZINE out to do a cover story on all the great water ski venues Hawaii has to offer. Most of his coverage was on this Island of Oahu with photos of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii Kai Marina, OWSC, and Kauai's Wailua River. Bill also resurrected the slalom course in the Hawaii Kai Marina Upper Pond, and the Hawaii Kai Marina Community Association Christmas Boat Parade!
